Dermatology

Dermatologists address conditions having to do with skin, nails and hair.

Acne

Acne is perhaps one of the most common dermatological concerns. Over 75 percent of people aged 11 to 30 experience breakouts, which can take many forms. Blackheads, whiteheads, painful cysts and pimples are all associated with the skin condition. In most cases, acne appears on the face, neck, chest, back and shoulders.

Eczema

Eczema is another top skin concern that can take many forms. It can be instigated by both genetic and environmental factors. Two main factors appear to worsen the condition: irritants and allergens. Irritants can cause redness and itchiness. Allergens actually trigger an immune response. Shingles is a skin condition caused by the virus that causes chicken pox. It causes a painful, itchy rash that usually appears on one side of the body. Health professionals often recommend that people over the age of 60 protect themselves with a shingles vaccine. Dermatologists are also sought to treat psoriasis, which is the nation’s most common autoimmune disease.

Other skin conditions

Psoriasis is characterized by red, scaly patches of skin that can appear anywhere on the body. It is a painful condition that typically impacts quality of life and self-esteem. Rosacea, scabies and skin cancer are also among the most common dermatological conditions. With skin cancer rates on the rise, experts recommend visiting a dermatologist once a year for a full-body examination. Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that is usually curable if caught early. While not the most common type of skin cancer, it is the deadliest. According to the American Cancer Society, over 76,000 new melanomas are diagnosed in the United States each year. Worrisome moles are typically asymmetrical, have uneven borders, change in color, are larger than a quarter of an inch, or evolve in shape, color, size, texture or elevation.
