Triglycerides are used for energy and are a kind of fat located in the blood. Most experts agree that a normal triglyceride level is under 150 /dl of blood. Elevated levels can be dangerous and are linked to increased heart disease risk. For this reason, maintaining normal levels is important to overall health.

According to experts, healthy triglyceride levels can be achieved by:

  • Keeping fit and maintaining a healthy weight
  • Avoiding saturated and trans fats* Incorporating more omega-3s into your diet
  • Limiting intake of refined carbs
  • Avoiding alcohol

Treating high Triglycerides

Certain medications may increase triglyceride levels. Steroids, beta-blockers, diuretics and birth control pills can all have this effect. Excessively high levels of triglycerides can lead to fatty deposits in the skin and organs. This, in turn, impairs blood flow and can cause a stroke or heart attack. High levels are dangerous and have been linked to pancreatitis, Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, dementia and liver disease.

Niacin, which is available in prescription form and as a non-prescription supplement, can significantly lower triglyceride level. Statins are used to lower bad cholesterol, but can also bring down triglycerides, as well. Keeping up with regular screenings is recommended to maintain healthy levels.
